Description

This essay thing is proving to be particularly difficult to complete, seeing as how I am in no way good at English grammar and structure and whatnot. But after beginning three other essays and not feeling any real connection to them, I figured I would try the stark honesty approach. After all, I'm sure this will be more appreciated than the ramblings of an uncommitted artist.

I'm usually kind of a literal person. When someone asks me to draw a sad picture, I'll draw a crying girl, or some other unfortunate scene. But when I thought of 'speak visual', drawings of literal visual illustrations spewing out of the mouth seemed obvious. Speaking visually has little to do with actual talking, but everything to do with communication. This piece conveys this by taking away the figure's means of speaking, compelling her to communicate through some almost supernatural means instead.

And when I think of it, you can't not speak in pictures. If there's a picture of anything, it's conveying something, even if that meaning is 'nothing'. You can speak visual without the mouth, but you can't without the eyes. You aren't speaking a thing if nobody is looking. That explains the various colors put into this piece and the illuminated claw on the girl's face. We have to grasp a viewer in order to tell him what we have to say.

Now, I could lie and say there are many more, deeper contextual meanings to my entry lying beneath the surface that need explaining, but that's just not my way as an artist. My goal in art is not only to share my inner creative impulses with whomever sees my art, but also to see my improvement and share that with anyone who may care. That's how I speak visual.
